Wind and hail damage
Damage to the structure from wind, hail and wind-driven rain entering through openings.
Wind and hail is usually included in a Texas property policy — but with its own deductible, and often its own roof settlement rules.
In most of the DFW area, windstorm and hail is covered within a standard homeowners or commercial property policy rather than bought separately. What changes is how it is covered: a separate percentage deductible, and increasingly restrictive settlement terms on older roofs.
A wind and hail deductible is usually a percentage of the insured value rather than a flat sum. On a $400,000 home a 2% deductible is $8,000, which is a very different proposition from the $1,000 all-other-perils deductible on the same policy.
Carriers have also moved toward actual cash value settlement on older roofs in hail-exposed areas, depreciating the roof before paying. Both of these are worth knowing before a storm rather than during a claim.

We are an independent agency, so we place your windstorm insurance across several carriers rather than fitting you to one company's product. That means a genuine comparison, and someone to call who is not a call centre.
Generally no — wind and hail is normally included in a standard property policy in the DFW area, unlike parts of the Texas coast where it is often written separately.
It is standard in hail-exposed parts of Texas. It applies to the insured value rather than being a flat sum, which produces a much larger figure than the deductible on other perils.
Usually where wind first creates an opening in the structure and rain enters through it. Water entering without storm damage to the building is treated differently and is often excluded.
Hail is the peril that defines property insurance in DFW. How your policy settles a roof claim matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country.
