Liability
Injury and third-party damage, including overhead strikes on the way off site.
The claim that defines this trade is a raised bed meeting something overhead. Power lines, bridges, canopies — all of it happens on the way out of a site.
Dump truck operators combine road exposure with heavy site work, and the losses reflect both. Alongside ordinary collision risk sits a specific and expensive scenario: pulling away with the bed still raised. Power lines and structures come down, and the third-party claim that follows can be far larger than the truck.
It is the single most characteristic dump truck claim, and it is rarely small. Striking a power line brings utility repair costs, potential outage claims from affected businesses, and injury exposure all at once.
This is a strong argument for carrying an umbrella above the primary liability. It is also why underwriters ask about driver training and pre-departure procedures — documented controls here genuinely affect appetite.
Construction and aggregate hauling is seasonal, and running full cover on parked trucks through a quiet period is wasted money. Storage or lay-up arrangements let you reduce liability cover while retaining physical damage on a stationary vehicle.
Tell us how the year actually runs. Structuring the policy around real utilisation is one of the few reliable ways to reduce cost in this class without reducing protection when the trucks are working.

Collision and comprehensive on trucks, beds and trailers.
The load being hauled, rated for the material and the distance.
Extra limits above primary, which utility strike claims can exhaust quickly.
Reduced cover on trucks parked through the quiet season.
For drivers and yard staff, and required on public contracts.
We are an independent agency, so we place your dump truck insurance across several carriers rather than fitting you to one company's product. That means a genuine comparison, and someone to call who is not a call centre.
Driving away with the bed raised and striking overhead lines or structures. The resulting claim can include utility repair, third-party business interruption from outages and injury, so it routinely exceeds a primary liability limit.
Often yes. Lay-up or storage arrangements let you drop liability on parked trucks while keeping physical damage in force. It is one of the few genuine savings available in this class.
Cargo cover handles it, rated for the commodity and haul length. For aggregate the values are usually modest, but the cover still matters when a load is lost or contaminated.
For dump truck operations it is strongly advisable and often contractually required on site work. Overhead and utility claims are the reason.
It should, but site work can raise questions about where auto cover ends and general liability begins. Placing both together avoids a dispute between insurers over an on-site incident.
Radius of operation, what you haul and who drives it. Those three answers set your premium more than anything else on the application.
