Business Insurance

Commercial truck insurance for working fleets.

Radius of operation, what you haul and who drives it. Those three answers set your premium more than anything else on the application.

Commercial truck insurance covers vehicles above the size and use that ordinary commercial auto contemplates, from a single flatbed working local sites to a small regional fleet. Unlike long-haul trucking under federal authority, much of this work is intrastate, and the underwriting turns on operating radius, commodity and driver quality rather than on filings.

Radius changes everything

A truck working within fifty miles of the yard is a materially different risk from one running four hundred miles a day, and carriers price accordingly. Local operation means more stops and more urban exposure; longer radius means more highway miles and more severe losses when they happen.

Declare the radius honestly. Rating a long-radius operation as local is one of the more common causes of a coverage dispute after a serious loss, and it is entirely avoidable.

Drivers are the other half of the rate

Motor vehicle records, experience and driver turnover carry real weight in truck underwriting. A clean roster is worth more to your premium than almost any other control you can put in place.

Written hiring criteria, an annual MVR review and a policy on personal use of company vehicles are the things underwriters ask about. Having them documented tends to open up markets that would otherwise decline the risk.

What it covers

The parts of a commercial truck insurance policy

Liability

Injury and property damage arising from operation of the vehicle.

Physical damage

Collision, comprehensive and hail on the truck and any trailers.

Cargo

The goods being carried, rated against the commodities you actually haul.

Hired and non-owned

Rented trucks and employee vehicles used for the business.

Equipment on board

Tools and equipment carried, which the auto policy does not cover.

Uninsured motorist

Protects your drivers when the at-fault party has no cover.

Working with us

What we do differently

We are an independent agency, so we place your commercial truck insurance across several carriers rather than fitting you to one company's product. That means a genuine comparison, and someone to call who is not a call centre.

  • Declare operating radius accurately — it is the largest single rating factor
  • Run MVRs annually and keep written hiring criteria; markets respond to it
  • Insure equipment carried separately from the vehicle itself
  • Review limits when you add a route, a commodity or a driver

Common questions

Commercial Truck Insurance, answered

What is the difference between commercial truck and trucking insurance?

Broadly, trucking insurance refers to motor carriers operating under FMCSA or TxDMV authority with filing requirements. Commercial truck insurance covers business-owned trucks that may not operate under that authority — local haulage, service trucks, flatbeds and similar.

Does operating radius really change the price?

Substantially. Local, intermediate and long radius are rated very differently because both frequency and severity change with distance and highway exposure. Declaring it accurately protects the claim as well as the price.

Do I need cargo cover for a service truck?

If you carry goods for others, yes. If you carry your own tools and materials, that is equipment cover rather than cargo — a different policy and a common point of confusion.

How are driver records used?

Motor vehicle records feed directly into rating and into whether a carrier will write the risk at all. An annual MVR review and documented hiring standards materially improve the markets available to you.

Is hail covered on a truck?

Under comprehensive, yes. In North Texas that is worth carrying even on older trucks, since hail regularly writes off vehicles that were otherwise serviceable.
